Our Curriculum

Wilderness Awareness and Naturalist Knowledge

We go far further than simply identifying and informing participants about their local landscape. To cultivate a true knowledge of ‘place’ and our presence in it we develop the ability to use all our senses in the field to understand the interconnected web of life. When all senses are engaged our body deeply remembers that we are an active part of the landscape. Students will know the language of the land by observing and sensing deeply like never before.

Curriculum:

Animal Tracking

Bird Language

Medicinal and edible plants

Local flora and fauna identification

Geology of the land

Terrestrial Ecology

Watershed wisdom

Science

We are all natural scientists. Just by deeply observing our surroundings we naturally ask and develop questions about the world around us. Students will engage in scientific principles firsthand, exploring ecological concepts, collaborating with their peers, and applying what they learn in real-time.

We use Next Generation Science Standards, and Crosscutting Concepts as pillars to prompt our science learning. These pillars focus not on what the students “know” but about how students think and interact with one another. We always provide ample time for natural inquiry science to flourish.

Curriculum:

Scientific Sketching

Nature Journaling

Field experiments

Student led inquiry investigations

Using tools to scientifically explore a field site: hand lenses, rulers, microscopes, field guides, binoculars

Water quality testing

Citizen Science Projects

Data collection

Develop empathetic social emotional attitudes

Students are often capable of much more than we would believe. Many six year-olds can identify poison oak versus a blackberry bush and ten year-olds can lead blindfolded peers safely through the woods. We respect the competency of our students while also providing them a safe, nurturing environment to grow. Hands-on skills give participants a meaningful way to engage in the world and boost their self confidence.

Curriculum:

Wilderness Hazards and Safety

Map Skills

Survival

Tending the land

Nature Based Crafts

Creative Arts and expression

Song, music, Poetry, Art

Peaceful conflict resolution practices
